Story 2

This isn't really happening. It's a dream, right? This is impossible.

My mind reels with confusion as I stare at the character creation screen floating in front of me, like I'd seen in so many anime and VRMMOs.

Welcome to The Game

Choose your character:

-HUMAN: Advantages and disadvantages based on race and class. Replayability and growth potential highest.

-HALVES (Half-Human Half-Elf): A perfect blend of both races' abilities, affinities and advantages/disadvantages. Unable to choose starting town, skill options and affinities fixed.

-ELF (High Elf): Proud descendants of magic itself, with an aptitude for both light and dark magic and an immunity to radiation. Skill options limited compared to Humans and Halves. Starts in Haven.

-DWAKINI (Kraken Hybrid): In touch with the powers of nature through water affinity, with special abilities and skills specific to this hybrid race. High compatibility with both light and darkness attributes. Starts in Meriden.

"Wait, you mean... I can be half anything? Wouldn't that just be another race? Like Elves or Dwarves?" I say aloud.

Please do not read this aloud! As far as I know, there is no one else with whom you can communicate during the process. The developers are evil and they may be trying to mess with me!

I'm definitely getting ahead of myself here. What am I supposed to be doing again? Oh, right: picking a character.

It's been quite a while since I last played an MMO. At first, my friends and I thought the game was a great idea – it certainly seemed like a huge improvement to the VRMMOs of today, which tend to put people in danger if something goes wrong. It only took them two minutes though to find out how stupid and useless those characters are. They're nothing compared to what we all really want, which is the ability to control a character through voice commands.

I wonder... Can you really make your own race?

What would you like to name yourself?

"Name myself? Is it that complicated? Don't you have your own name?"

The Game recognizes no names other than those given by participants, even its own developers. The system has already been set so that we may call each other anything we please! However, please note that once you enter The Game, your name will be known to others within it. Choose carefully what you are comfortable with being called outside of the game world.

As my mind runs through different options, I realize that everything I come up with sounds extremely unappealing and cheesy.

I guess it doesn't matter too much since these guys won't even use our real names anyway. But maybe you shouldn't think about it too long, I tell myself, shaking my head and clearing the thoughts from my brain. That way I don't screw up on accident and end up being stuck with something stupid forever!

I'm curious though; does this thing really recognize every name except the ones I give it?

"What's my real name?"

This character is not equipped with a 'real name'. If you are attempting to access information about your background, please specify: Family name? Parents' names? Siblings? Spouse?

"My full name?"

Your full name is.
